Processor: A20 vs A20 Pro
The iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Plus are expected to use the A20; the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max use the A20 Pro. The Pro chip typically adds GPU cores, memory bandwidth and neural-engine capacity. That translates into higher sustained frame rates in demanding games, faster video encoding and more headroom for on-device AI. For everyday apps, both chips are far past the point of being a bottleneck.
Camera System: Two Lenses vs Three
This is the biggest functional difference. Non-Pro models are expected to pair a 48MP main sensor with a 12MP ultrawide, offering 1x, 2x cropped and 0.5x framing. Pro models are expected to add a third 48MP telephoto and a variable-aperture main sensor, giving true optical zoom, higher-resolution ultrawide shots and greater creative control over depth of field. Pro models also unlock the highest-end video capture formats.
Display Technology
ProMotion is expected across all four models, but the Pro panels use LTPO technology that can lower refresh rate further for efficiency and always-on display behaviour. Peak outdoor brightness is also typically higher on Pro models. In normal indoor use, all four screens look excellent; the difference shows in direct sunlight and in standby efficiency.
Battery and Charging
Capacity scales with chassis size rather than tier, so the iPhone 18 Plus outlasts the iPhone 18 Pro despite being the cheaper model. Pro models are expected to charge faster over a wired connection. If endurance is your priority and budget is limited, the Plus is often the smarter buy than a smaller Pro.
Build Materials and Design
Non-Pro models are expected to use an aluminium frame; Pro models use a premium frame construction with a redesigned camera plateau. Both use the same protective front glass. The difference is one of feel and weight rather than durability in daily use.
Price Positioning
Expected pricing runs from around $799 for the iPhone 18, $899 for the iPhone 18 Plus, $1,099 for the iPhone 18 Pro and $1,199 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, before storage upgrades. The step from standard to Pro is the largest single price jump in the line-up, and it buys camera hardware more than anything else.
