The Four Models at a Glance
The iPhone 18 is the 6.3-inch entry point, expected to run the A20 chip with a 48MP main camera and a 12MP ultrawide. The iPhone 18 Plus keeps identical internals but stretches the display to 6.9 inches and adds a substantially larger battery. The iPhone 18 Pro moves to the A20 Pro chip, a triple 48MP rear system with a variable-aperture main sensor, and an LTPO ProMotion panel. The iPhone 18 Pro Max matches the Pro feature-for-feature while adding the largest display and the biggest battery Apple has shipped in an iPhone. In short: the non-Pro pair differ only in size, while the Pro pair differ only in size too — the real dividing line runs between non-Pro and Pro.
Chip and Performance Split
Both non-Pro models are expected to use the A20, while both Pro models use the A20 Pro. Historically the Pro variant adds an extra GPU core, more memory bandwidth and a larger neural engine, which matters for sustained gaming, ProRes video capture and on-device AI workloads. For messaging, browsing, photography and streaming, the standard A20 is far beyond what those tasks require, and the difference will be invisible in daily use.
Camera Hardware Differences
The clearest hardware gap is the camera. The iPhone 18 and 18 Plus are expected to keep a two-camera system: a 48MP main sensor plus a 12MP ultrawide, with 2x cropped zoom from the main sensor. The Pro models are expected to run three 48MP sensors — main with variable aperture, ultrawide and telephoto — enabling true optical zoom, higher-resolution ultrawide capture and better low-light reach across every focal length. If zoom range or video work matters to you, that is the single strongest reason to move up to a Pro.
Display and Size
The iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Pro share a 6.3-inch footprint; the iPhone 18 Plus and iPhone 18 Pro Max share a 6.9-inch footprint. ProMotion is expected across the whole line-up for the first time, though the Pro models use LTPO panels that can drop further down the refresh range for better efficiency and always-on display behaviour. Choose the size first — it is the specification you interact with every minute of the day.
Battery and Charging
Battery capacity scales with size. The iPhone 18 is expected around 3,700 mAh, the 18 Plus around 4,700 mAh, the 18 Pro around 3,900 mAh and the 18 Pro Max around 5,000 mAh. Wired charging is expected to be faster on the Pro models. In practice, both large models comfortably clear a heavy day, while the two 6.3-inch models land closer to a normal full day with moderate use.
Software and Support
All four models ship with the same iOS release and receive the same feature set and support window — typically five to seven years of updates. There is no software advantage to buying a Pro beyond features that depend directly on Pro camera hardware, such as higher-end video capture modes.
